Name Spear Wall Formation
Type Tactical Formation
Used by Go Kei

Introduction[]

The Spear Wall Formation is a war tactic used by Great General Go Kei of the Wei Military.

Strengths[]

This tactic relies on the front line of an army to pierce through an opposing's army front line. By quickly moving and striking with the spear, multiple soldiers in one line could be killed. While an excellent attacking strategy, the spear wall is also a formidable defense strategy. Without the use of arrow or ranged back up, going in melee combat versus a spear wall is very dangerous as the opponents can retaliate without harm.

Weaknesses[]

Due to the Spear Wall Formation working as a mainly immobile group of units striking or defending from opponents in front of them, this left the armies vulnerable to flanks or attacks from the rear. Also, because of the weight of the spears, the soldiers cannot not wield any shields, thus leaving them quite defenseless against ranged attacks, such as arrows.

Trivia[]

  • A similar tactic was used by Alexander the Great and the Macedonian Army. This included the use of long heavy spears called 'sarissa'. The back line of an army would hold the sarissas upwards, while the front line would strike and pierce the enemy front line with ease, usually with 1 soldier killing almost 5 soldiers on the enemy's side. This tactic was called the Phalanx and was the main reason why the Macedonian Army won so many battles.
  • A variation of this is the using a pole weapon, or a kind of a spear that could be thrown. This could result in both ranged and melee combat.
