The Six Great Generals of Qin are a famous group of six powerful Great Generals personally appointed by King Sho to do battle in his name as he aspired to conquer and rule over all of China. These warriors were given the right to freely make war on neighboring states which meant that their autonomy made it difficult for other states to predict their actions, this system made Qin a state to fear as it gave them a vast amount of military intimidation. In 234 B.C. the system was revived by 31st king Ei Sei in order to conquer China for his dream of unification.
History
During the reign of King Sho, the war-hungry monarch created this system as a means through which he would establish his rule over all of China. This allowed Qin to gain high level of military intimidation and conquer vast territory. Qin was considered the most dangerous state in all of China during the time of King Sho and would cause enemies to lock their gates when one of their armies drew near. Some would open their gates and surrender rather than challenge the famous group of generals. Six Great Generals also fought many raging battles against Three Great Heavens and Zhao and Seven Fire Dragons of Wei.
The system has been eventually recreated by the King Ei Sei in the year 234 B.C. Divine swallow was established as the symbol of Six Great Generals based on the legend of Qin's origins. King Ei Sei created a statue of a swallow with six wings, gave the statue a protection of ancestral spirits in Kinen Shrine and entrusted one wing to every Great General, so that they would return the wings the moment their goal will be completed.
Strengths
The greatest strength of the system was the caliber of the generals chosen to be one of the six and the autonomy is given to each general to conduct separate wars on King Sho's behalf, with the six acting as a strong independent force in the warring states. In addition to this, the skills and strengths of the chosen generals helped spread the word of Qin's military might to all. Their strength was considered on par with Zhao's Three Great Heavens, and the "Military God" Gaku Ki of Yan. Ou Ki commented that one would need to have experienced a hundred battles and have the immense martial talent to be considered in the same class as the Great Generals.
While Six Generals fought their battles independently, they always knew others had their backs, which allowed them to claim territory without pause.
Weakness
Despite this, its weakness was the risk of rebellion that came from handling thousands of soldiers over to a single general to command. This was not a problem in King Sho's time due to the unshakeable "loyalty of iron" that existed between the king and the six generals, however king Ei Sei believes that the new generation does not have the loyalty on the same level.
The system also required a constant resupply of soldiers and supplies which put a great strain on the state's resources and coffers. It was also mentioned that having more than six members would create unrest in the lower ranks and the edge the state would obtain by quick decision making would be lost.
