Ryuu'an is the City Lord of Nanyou, an important city in the state of Han. After Nanyou was conquered by Qin he continued to serve the city under Gou Kei's rule.

Appearance[]

Ryuu'an is a lean man with dark hair tied in the back and long sidelocks. He has a thin mustache, thin eyebrows and goatee. He is usually wearing official robes and coronet that symbolize his authority.

Personality[]

Ryuu'an is a capable leader, putting the wellbeing of the people of his city above his own life. When the Qin forces occupy Nanyou, he is ready to offer his own head for their safety. He is also demonstrated as being generally calm and levelheaded, being able to keep his cool demeanor even in the most difficult of situations.

Due to his personality which he came to enact in his lordship of Nanyou, he is beloved by the people of the city, so much so that some are willing to offer their heads in order for his safety.

History[]

At some point, Ryuu'an was appointed lord of Nanyou city. He eventually became known throughout the country for his effective lordship over the city, so much so that he came to be considered by Chancellor Chou as the most talented man amongst all the castle lords in Han.

Story[]

Three Pillars Arc[]

After the Han royal court decision to retreat the Nanyou army back to the capital city, thus leaving Nanyou completely defenseless against an encroaching Qin invading army, Ryuu'an decides to abide by their decision, despite the protest of many of his subordinates. He thus decides that they will completely surrender before the Qin.

He also decides for his court to evacuate the city, ordering them to make sure that they evacuate the noble families and other local people of influence, in order to prepare for an eventual rebuilding of Han in the near future, while he would stay in the city, and offer his head in case the wellbeing of the remaining citizens of Nanyou is threatened by the invaders.

When the Qin Six General Tou arrives in the city, Ryuu'an greets him, offering his unconditional surrender, while pleading for the Qin to not oppress the city's population. After a group of children whose parents were killed by the Qin army hoisted Han's flag in protest of the occupation, Ryuu'an promptly pleads to be punished instead of the children, to which the general Tou refuses, asking for both Qin and Han's flags to be hoisted together. This decision is prompted by Tou's desire to turn Nanyou into a perfect example of a unified China, where people from different nations would be able to coexist and live in peace, with the hopes of that sending a positive message throughout the whole continent.

Afterwards, the official from Kanyou assigned to oversee Nanyou arrives in the city, and at the sight of the two flags hoisted together and learning about Ryuu'an still being alive, he orders for the Han flag to be put down, and for the population to abide strictly by Qin's legalism, starting by cutting off Ryuu'an's head.

Ryuu'an is thus brought in front of Gou Kei, who sentences him to being beheaded for having participated in acts of war against Qin, such as sending Nanyou's troops and the bulk of its food stores in order to reinforce the capital of Shintei. This sparks a heated debate between Gou Kei and the general Tou, who believes that Ryuu'an's popularity amongst the citizens cannot be wasted by beheading him, which would make his desire to turn Nanyou into a perfect miniature of what a peaceful unified continent could look like, disappear.

After an argument regarding both sides not knowing which of Tou or Gou Kei were the highest authority inside Nanyou, a missive is sent to Kanyou in order for the royal court to analyze the situation and give a definitive answer to the problem. Kanyou's decision turns in favor of Tou, and Ryuu'an's life is thus spared, and he even is able to retain his status as the city lord.

In the following days and weeks, Ryuu'an works with Gou Kei in administrating the city's various affairs, such as judging people for theft. He generally pleads for the citizen's difficulties of adapting to Qin's severe legalism to Gokei, while urging his citizens to be understanding and to forcefully adapt to the situation for their safety and wellbeing.

One day, a local young boy named Rou Jin stabs a Qin soldier after he assaulted his sister and killed his father who intervened in the sexual assault. Ryuu'an is urged by the citizens to help the young boy from being killed by the Qin in retaliation, but he can't do anything. Though to their surprise, Gou Kei orders the decapitation of the Qin soldier, announcing that the laws of Qin are to be applied to anyone, no matter their profession or their origins. With this, the occupying Qin and the Han citizens of Nanyou slowly grow closer to each other, and Ryuu'an becomes even closer to Gou Kei. Both combine their efforts in the next 6 months and take care of the city's various problems one by one.

6 months after, the time for the Qin army's conquest of Shintei arrives, and Ryuu'an shares his concerns to Tou about his nation being completely subjugated but also expresses his amazement at how much the city changed ever since the occupation. Tou then asks him to relay to all the surrounding Han castles the situation in Nanyou.

Abilities[]

Ryuu'an was mentioned to be the most talented man among all the castle lords in Han.[1] After his city faced an invasion, he was able to calmly analyze the situation as well as raise the morale of his fellow officials while deciding the most efficient course of action.
