The Village Leader(or Village Chief) is the village head of Jouto Village where Shin and Hyou once lived as slaves. As Village Leader, it was his role to take in war orphans and house them appropriately.[1]

Appearance[]

The Village Leader is a large man with dark hair tied into a bun, a moustache, and buckteeth. He has dark spots on his skin near his eyes. He dresses in relatively fancy clothing for a villager, though it does not compare to the attire nobles are seen wearing.[1]

Personality[]

The Village Leader initially came off as a rather harsh man having beaten Shin after he scared Yuu. He angrily reminded Shin be grateful for the fact that he took him in despite it being his role to do so.[1]

The Village Leader is also openly sycophantic. He behaved exceedingly and unnaturally politely when Shou Bun Kun lets him know that he wishes to buy Hyou's freedom, and pretended to treat him nicely though quickly dropping the veil with Shin.[1]

The Village Leader is also a bit of a coward. When Hyou appeared gravely injured, the Village Leader merely spectated and was too confused or afraid to arrange for a doctor. He was also afraid of Shin being angry after he found out about Hyou's condition, too afraid to speak up despite hearing that Shin would be heading to the dangerous Kokuhi Village, though he would eventually give Shin advice on how to get there.[2]

Story[]

Sei Kyou's Rebellion Arc[]

One day in 245 BCE, the Village Leader and his family sit down to eat dinner, and immediately recoil at how bad the meal tastes. His son finds out that Shin was the one who made dinner, and begins scolding and insulting him. Shin glares at his son and his son immediately calls for his father, who rushes over and begins caning Shin and asking him where his gratitude for looking after him was, despite the fact that it was his role to do so.[1]

The next day, Shou Bun Kun appears at his home and makes an offer to buy Hyou's freedom. He waits with Shou Bun Kun for Shin and Hyou to return from their daily errands and treats Hyou nicely as he invites Hyou in, though he treats Shin as disrespectfully as normal. Inside their home, the Village Leader introduces Shou Bun Kun as a powerful nobleman within Qin that serves as a minister in the royal court, and tells Hyou that he was buying his freedom from that day onward. When he sees Hyou hesitating, he asks Hyou why he did not just accept.[1]

The days pass with the Village Leader and his family continuing on life without Hyou. One night a month later, he hears a commotion near the shed where Hyou used to stay with Shin and comes out with a club, asking Shin if it was a burglar. Shin asks him to call for the doctor, and the Village Leader sees that Hyou had returned, and that there was a lot of blood on the ground. He listens to Shin and Hyou's conversation and is surprised to hear that there had been a coup within the royal court, with people following Hyou's blood trail and likely arriving soon. Hyou then speaks to the Village Leader and asks him to say that he was a stranger who snuck into his shed and died there.[1]

Shin vows to avenge Hyou but Hyou instead asks him to redirect his energy and head to Kokuhi Village, which the Village Leader hears. Hyou dies shortly after,[1] and the Village Leader and his family watch as Shin loses himself to his emotions and cracks the wall of his shed with a punch in anger. His voice trembles as he asks Shin to stop, and then watches in shock as his son hits Shin in the head in an attempt to get him to control himself. After Shin calms down, he demands Shin explain the situation. Before Shin leaves for Kokuhi Village, the Village Leader gives him advice on how to reach there, but warns him that it was a lawless village where thieves and murderers congregated, and that he stood little chance of returning alive.[2]
