| “ | I will not lose. I...will not shatter. Because I am...Ei Sei's...the king who will unify this land's...unbreakable sword!! And I...I am... A man who will become a Great General of the Heavens!! | ” |
—Xin to Chou Ga Ryuu during their final duel. [20]
Li Xin, formerly known as Xin, is the main protagonist of Kingdom. He is the leader of the powerfully famous specialist army unit, the Hi Shin Unit, and a General of the Qin Military. He pursues the dream of becoming the Greatest General underneath the Heavens, continued on from the dream shared with his late brother-like friend, Li Piao, who was the one to inspire Xin to take up the sword and have their names etched in history through the battlefield.
Originally an orphan-turned-slave in the small Qin countryside village of Jouto, Xin left the village after witnessing Piao's death and met Ying Zheng, the 31st king of the state of Qin and He Liao Diao, a lookout for the lawless village near where Ying Zheng hid from enemies, as they became embroiled in the young king's battle for his throne during his half brother's rebellion.
As a military commander, Xin has fiercely participated in numerous campaigns and countless battlefields throughout the Warring States, having begun his career as a simple infantry soldier fighting under the famous late Duke Hyou in the Battle at Dakan Plains against the Wei Military, and eventually clashing with legends across the generations of military commanders of the continent, like the famed Rin Ko of Ren Pa's Four Heavenly Kings, Ri Boku and Hou Ken of Zhao's Three Great Heavens, and even bigger entities like the Ryo Fui Faction or the Coalition Army.
Despite his youth and relative inexperience, Xin has repeatedly clashed with formidable military opponents and secured victories across numerous battlefronts. Rising to the rank of 100-Man Commander after his first campaign, he distinguished himself by eliminating key figures in the Go Kei Army and played a crucial role in the Keiyou Campaign.
He later assisted Great General Ou Ki in the Battle of Bayou, which was commanded by two of Zhao's Three Great Heavens, and became a key figure in the successful invasion of Sanyou, where he directly contributed to Qin's victory over the legendary Ren Pa and his army. Under Duke Hyou, he fought in the Battle of Kankoku Pass, playing a vital role in key developments against the Zhao armies and personally slaying the sadistic Man Goku. Xin was later entrusted with the role of commander in the Battle of Sai, where he faced the Bushin Hou Ken, a foe he would ultimately defeat and kill on the final day of the Battle at Shukai Plains years later.
Xin has gained fame across the Warring States through his accomplishments, martial prowess, being one of the strongest combatants of his generation's military commanders, contributions to the Ei Sei Faction, and desire to Unify China as well as the focused hostility of Ri Boku in particular.
Appearance
Xin first appeared as a lean but slightly muscular 14-year-old boy with hazel, slanted eyes and spiky black (or brown, depending on the art's coloring) hair, styled with a small rat-tail at the back.[21]
Initially, his facial features were soft and round, but as he aged, they became more defined and muscular. Following General Ou Ki’s death, his hair grew slightly longer, with his rat tail reaching his shoulders, and he became noticeably taller and more muscular, though his overall appearance remained largely unchanged.
For casual wear, Xin consistently dons a sleeveless blue Yue-style shirt adorned with black rectangles, fastened with a black (or brown, depending on the coloring) cloth belt. In his early days, he wore straw sandals, reinforcing his scrappy, peasant-like appearance. However, after becoming a 1000-Man Commander, he switched to Qin-style ju shoes and began wearing white pants reaching down to his thighs, along with black wristbands on occasion.
On the battlefield, Xin initially retained his rough, peasant-like look, despite purchasing armor after being promoted to 100-man Commander. By the Sanyou Campaign Arc, he added black wristbands to his attire. After the campaign, he officially adopted a more structured battle outfit, including sky-blue scale mail armor, arm bracers inscribed with Kyou Kai’s clan markings, and matching leather boots. He maintained this appearance throughout his time as a 1000-Man and 3000-Man Commander, except in moments when he was without his bracers or wristbands, such as during his encounters with Kou Yoku and Haku Rei, his reunion with Ri Boku, and at the start of the Coalition Invasion Arc.
Upon being promoted to 4000-Man Commander, two years after the coalition invasion, Xin slightly modified his armor, adding neck guard spikes on his right pauldron as a tribute to the late Great General Duke Hyou.[22]
Xin has largely retained this appearance over the years while on the battlefield. However, during the Battle at Shukai Plains, his armor sustained significant damage—his left pauldron was destroyed by a Dojaku captain from the Chou Ga Ryuu Army, and his brutal duel with Hou Ken left his armor severely wrecked with each of the Bushin’s powerful strikes.
After the conclusion of the Gyou Campaign and his promotion to General, Xin briefly adopted a long-sleeved version of his blue Yue shirt beneath his armor. However, he quickly reverted to his signature sleeveless look. Xin has also consistently carried Hyou's sword strapped to his back. Additionally, he possesses Duke Hyou’s shield of which entrusted to Ei Sei for safekeeping.
Personality
| “ | Hahaha, Xin-dono...You might look stupid but you can surprisingly crafty too! | ” |
—En on Xin's cleverness.
Xin is fiercely loyal to his friends as shown when he vows to avenge Piao, even at the risk of his own death. He is extremely hotheaded and brash but carries a heart of gold that holds an extreme amount of determination, His hot temper also made him clash with He Liao Diao and they tend to bicker like siblings constantly back when they were younger. Despite his brashness, Xin has showed himself to be quite a teaser, regularly poking fun towards his comrades and friends.
He is also capable of great rage when provoked by others, making him a deadly opponent to fight against. His long days as a servant spent with Piao made them inextricably linked and thus bring him up various times during his life.
Xin is a very headstrong and courageous man which is evident where he unhesitatingly challenges fierce enemies often ones that are much stronger than him (such as Sa Ji, Ma Ki, and to a much greater extent, Hou Ken, Rin Ko, and Ren Pa).
Xin also shows an exceptional level of charisma, who can not only encourage and lead his own soldiers with his words, but also has managed to impress even the greatest individuals after his participation in the different campaigns and battles, including Yo Tan Wa, Ou Ki, Mou Gou, Ri Boku, Rin Ko, Ren Pa, and Duke Hyou. At the same time, he carries a deep resolve in Unifying China and holds an unbreakable respect for the "wills of fires" carried by allies, enemies, civilians, and etc. no matter their individual allegiances or mindsets. This trait of his has attracted comrades and allies, in addition to greatly being respected by the officers and soldiers of his unit, he has earned the regard and respect from his peers in the military, multiple military commanders and military official of high command, respective opponents among the enemy states, Court officials, and even royalty.
Will
Xin's will has largely been shaped by various generals or figures of note he has fought under, with, or against.
Ou Ki's words during his final clash with Hou Ken could be said to provide the foundation of Xin's current philosophy, where he spoke of how the "hopes and wishes which faded together with the spark of life of all [the tens of thousands of comrades' and hundreds of thousands of foes'] lives dwell heavily upon [his] two shoulders".[23]
Goals
Xin's goal is to become the greatest general in history, while carrying the will of Piao after his death. While initially unsure of how precisely to achieve it, he was inspired by Ren Pa's words on overwriting his and the previous era's military figures' legend. Thus, Xin's dream and Ying Zheng's dream merged into one — the unification of China. More recently, Xin has asked Kyou Kai to marry him after Unifying China and now awaits her answer.

Although lacking natural talent for formal strategy and tactics, Xin has honed his instincts to an extraordinary level, allowing him to read the flow of battle with keen insight. Rather than commanding from HQ, he leads from the front, spearheading direct charges that carve deep into enemy ranks.
Through this approach, Xin and the Hi Shin Unit have become formidable warriors, excelling in combat against enemies twice their number. As a fighter, Xin possesses exceptional physical abilities and martial prowess, demonstrating incredible strength even before joining the Qin Military and experiencing the battlefield.
His two greatest assets are his unyielding tenacity and relentless drive for growth. These traits define both his combat style and his continual rise in power. When enraged, Xin can push past his physical limits, overwhelming his enemies through sheer brute strength alone.
Physical Abilities
Immense Strength: Xin's monstrous strength is one of his most prominent traits and was evident even at a young age. When he was filled with rage over Hyou's death, Xin was able to smash through stone walls with his fist and overpower four adult men simultaneously despite the huge difference in size.
He regularly applies tremendous force in his fighting style, being able to easily cut down a large number of armored soldiers with one arm. His strength has only grown as he was able to his hold own against Rin Ko, the second strongest vassal of Ren Pa, which was enough to slay him. He has even managed to beat and kill Hou Ken, a man who was only ever wounded by Kyou, Ou Ki, and Duke Hyou, three of the most prominent fighters in the state of Qin.
Immense Agility: Xin is extremely agile dodging fast attacks numerous times throughout his battles and duels. He is agile enough to match Kyou Kai's movements during their friendly sparring matches having once stolen her headband. While fighting on the battlefield, he cut down multiple enemies at once with incredible swiftness, giving them little time to react, and even managed to match Hou Ken in terms of speed during their brief first bout.
Combat Adaptation: Xin possesses exceptional adaptability in battle, allowing him to quickly adjust and gain the upper hand. His ability to adapt was first demonstrated in his final duel with Rin Ko of the Four Heavenly Kings—after suffering a crippling leg injury, he immediately shifted the fight from horseback to even ground, recognizing that remaining mounted would lead to defeat.[24]
Having learned the art of feints from Kyou Kai, Xin used this technique to bait the swift and evasive Fu Tei into his sword’s range.[25] Similarly, during his fight against Jo Rin, the left captain of the Dojaku Unit, Xin strategically sacrificed his right side to the spearman’s attack, creating an opening to bisect his opponent’s head.
Xin's willpower.
Immense Endurance and Stamina: Xin has displayed an immense amount of tenacity to the point he is capable of fighting on despite excessive blood loss and numbness from heavy wounds. As shown during his fights with Jo Kan, Muta, Sa Ji the assassin swordsman, and Ran Kai, he was able to stay conscious and fight on despite losing a large amount of blood and being hit constantly by physically stronger opponents.
His endurance has only grown exponentially over the years as he went to constant battlefields and survived numerous duels with stronger opponents.[26] His ability was pushed to its limits during the 6th day of the Battle of Sai as he was able to fight on for days with little to no sleep through sheer willpower alone, again in his fight with Gyou’un, in which it took all his willpower to stay conscious, and in his final duel against Hou Ken as he nearly died from massive blood loss.
Enhanced Healing Rate: Xin has a higher healing rate than an average person as shown with him recovering from serious and near fatal injures.[27]
Master Swordsman: Xin is an extraordinarily talented and skilled master swordsman despite being completely self-taught. Due to his relentless sparring matches with Hyou that numbered in 1000, his ability and skill had already surpassed the limits of an average Qin soldier at a young age.[28] Even when wielding a wooden sword, Xin displayed his prowess by taking on the vicious killers of Heibei Village single-handedly.[29]
As he continued to hone his skills, he defeated Clan Shukyou's Jo Kan in his first real duel [30] and overpowered Muta of the Basha tribe. These experiences proved invaluable for Xin as he later fought multiple trained rebel soldiers of the Sei Kyou Faction with little effort and defeated Sa Ji, the faction's chief assassin.
With advice from Heki, Xin learned to focus his strength into a single point, a technique that enabled him to pierce the thick hide of the monstrous Ran Kai. Through relentless battles and sparring sessions with Kyou Kai, he refined his precision and skill, becoming strong enough to defeat elite swordsmen such as Fuu Ki’s bodyguards and land a blow on Hou Ken, a fearsome Bushin. Xin would surpass his limits through his clashes with seasoned warrior the dual-wielding master Rin Ko over the course of the Sanyou Campaign and defeated the famed general.
By the time of the Battle of Kankoku Pass and Battle of Sai, his mastery continued to grow, culminating in defeating the vicious Man Goku, and the swift Fu Tei. In his second battle against Hou Ken, he managed to wound the Great Heaven and slashed the Bushin across the face, an achievement previously accomplished by General Ou Ki.
Xin's "Freedom" form swordsmanship.
Xin’s swordsmanship had already reached a high level, allowing him to duel and slay Kei Sha, a formidable swordsman, during the Battle of Kokuyou Hills. Despite not always using his sword as his primary weapon, his skill remained undiminished. Over time, his technique evolved into an entirely new swordsmanship style, enabling him to match the speed of Gaku Haku Kou, a master martial artist, during the Battle of Eikyuu.
- Jump Attack: Xin's special move in which he jumps into the air and delivers a powerful falling slash usually to the opponent's chest or head. This technique allows him to compensate for his short reach and add more power to the attack from the falling momentum. He also used the attack with his glaive, although not as often as with the sword.
Xin slaying Gaku'Ei in an instant.
Glaive Mastery: Xin would take up wielding a glaive and make it his main weapon to prepare himself to wield General Ou Ki's Glaive sometime after the Coalition's Invasion. Initially, Xin’s fighting style was raw and unrefined, relying heavily on his immense strength rather than technique. His sheer power allowed him to compensate for his lack of skill, effortlessly cutting down entire battalions of infantry and cavalry with each swing of his blade. This destructive prowess, combined with his boldness, helped him survive and even hold his ground against formidable opponents like Gai Mou, who acknowledged his courage in battle.
As he gained more experience, Xin grew more accustomed to his weapon that he could hold his own against martial-focused warriors like Ba Tei to a standstill and defeat elite soldiers, including Kei Sha’s personal guard of veteran fighters. During the Gyou Campaign, Xin’s skill advanced to the point where he adopted the Monstrous Bird’s weapon , which has since become his primary weapon.
In taking his idol's treasured blade, Xin’s skill has grown to the point where he can cut down multiple soldiers with a single swing. He held his own against the far more experienced Gyou’un, even sending the Zhao General reeling with powerful strikes. His prowess was further proven when he instantly slew Gaku'Ei in one blow and later engaged in a fierce duel with Hou Ken. In their final battle, Xin overwhelmed the Bushin, cleaving him in half and securing a complete victory.
Horsemanship: Xin is an expert cavalryman as he slowly but surely becomes an expert in horsemanship. While he was hopeless in his first try of riding a horse, he quickly took control of handling a horse. By the time of the Battle at Dakan Plains, Xin was already an impressive horse rider having rode and bonded with a Wei Chariot horse, to the point that the beast continued for him despite being on the brink of death. He discovered his talent in mounted combat as he fought against multiple Wei War Chariots, killed a Chariot captain with a single strike from his sword while the man was falling mid-air, blocked and withstood arrows fired by Kou Ri Gen, a member of the Ten Bows of China without falling off his horse, and held his own against Ma Ki. After his duel with Rin Ko, he became a masterful expert in directing and misleading his opponent with a subtle movement that ended with a deadly surprise attack.
Hand-to-Hand Combatant: Xin is powerful in bare-knuckle combat aside from being a first-class weaponry expert. This is evident even as far back in his childhood when he easily defeated the Bi Brothers with simple punches, he sent both of them falling to the ground.
His prowess was further demonstrated in his teenage years when he sent the giant Tajifu flying into the air with a single punch and broke a stateless raider's nose while kneeing him in the face, both of whom were full-grown adults. He has since grown in power as an adult as he sent Rai Do, a powerful 5000-Man Commander of the Kan Ki Army, flying into the air with a stationary punch.
Leadership
Xin possesses the natural ability to inspire the people around him to powerful heights of morale. He would hone his leadership abilities while training in the stateless area and show a calm maturity but a passionate display of leading from the front afterward. It was stated by Rin Ko that Xin was a greater leader than he was at the age of 17, when at the time he had become the figurehead for the entire central Qin army on the last day of the Sanyou Campaign which completely halted the Wei Army's advance.
His ability as a leader has only grown over the years which was shown when he led the 10,000 of Duke Hyou's soldiers most of whom were in disarray, retreating, and heavily injured against the Man Goku Army and continue the fight against overwhelming Ri Boku Army during the Battle of Sai.
This has only grown to further and further heights as he empowered the Qin army to protect and save their king's family in the Siege of Kanyou. And again, when he led the injured Hi Shin Unit to continue fighting against the powerful elites of the Kei Sha Army. This would later acclimated in one of his greatest feats yet during the Battle at Shukai Plains, with a passionate speech that was able to "awaken" the entire Hi Shin Unit to ignored their hunger, fatigue, and tired states to the point where they were able to push back the Gyou’un Army - a feat that was directly compared to the past feats of the Six Great Generals.
Xin's leadership has also inspired and empowered his men to go to great lengths in protecting him from danger to the point that they're ready to die for him. This was first seen in the Battle of Bayou when Taku Kei and the Bi Brothers protected him from Hou Ken's deadly strikes along with the Hi Shin squad leaders distracting Man Goku and his unit by using themselves as bait, and the Bi Brothers pushing themselves to the limit to save him while both were heavily injured.
This brand of self-sacrificing remains unchanged as Den Yuu would unflinchingly use his own body to shield Xin from an ambush during the Siege of Kanyou. After his final duel with Hou Ken, the entirety of the Hi Shin members stopped in their tracks paralyzed with great sadness and distraught when they thought Xin had "died."
Tactical Abilities
Competent Strategist: Xin has a basic grasp of on the field tactics having built up plenty of experiences after training in the stateless area with En, prior to awakening his abilities as an instinctual type. He developed an impressive use of group tactics in the Battle of Bayou as he showed a great understanding the benefits of a 100-Man Unit and that even in a battle with armies of ten thousand soldiers, they have their own strengths and could slip into an opening and concentrate on weak point to become an "unbreakable rock." And that it was possible to slay a General of a 20,000 strong army. [31]
He and En showed a masterful understanding of flanking larger groups of opponents during the strategy meeting with the Squad Leaders.[32]
Later demonstrating an impressive usage of surprise attacks against a larger and highly trained army of opponents[33] and came up with a plan to kill Hou Ken in midst of the Bushin's attack on their Headquarters by placing three separate groups to covertly surround the Great Heaven in the midst of the chaotic brawl between the Zhao and Qin armies.[34]
Xin awakening his inner talent as an Instinctual Type.
Instinctual Type: Xin awakened his abilities as an instinctual type military commander during the invasion of Qin by the Coalition Army at the Battle of Kankoku Pass on the first day. While he was able to sense that the rear of the Duke Hyou Army would be attacked, he moved accordingly to counterattack the vicious onslaught from the Man Goku Army. In the following days, he felt that there was something off with the Coalition as he thought that the Chu army was kind of quiet in their attacks.
Since then, Xin has honed and strengthen his instinct throughout his military service after Duke Hyou's death. At the end of the Choyou Campaign after Go Hou Mei's main HQ had been seized and captured, he noticed and sensed that there was another army moving in the nearby forest. He charged in alone and was able killed Rei Ou of the Wei's Seven Fire Dragon in a single swoop with that surprise attack.
Three years later, Xin's instincts developed to the level where he could command his soldiers with pure intuition and matched tactics with Gyou’un, a talented and more experienced instinctual commander, having read the Zhao General's attempt to "burn" away the Hi Shin Unit's position while also launching a surprised on their HQ during the Battle at Shukai Plains.
His instinct continued to evolve to the point he demonstrated an uncanny level of calm intuition as he withdrew the entire Hi Shin Unit from the Kan Ki Army's right-wing position to reinforce the Gaku Ka Army's position and combined their forces to launch counter offenses to break out of Ri Boku's entrapment that the Great Heaven made with half years' worth of planning and used himself as bait to lure out Gou Za Kou, a Zhao commander positioned in the back of the Shi Ba Shou Army's formation, for Kyou Kai to flank him.
These maneuvers were unpredictable but yet hugely impactful as it made Ri Boku feel as if he was fighting against the late Great General Duke Hyou himself with the Zhao Great General praising Xin to be a worthy opponent during the Battle of Gian.
Military Formations: Xin is capable of utilizing military formations albeit at a basic style of usage. During the Battle of Bayou's first day, he decided to use a Column Formation in order to flank the Fuu Ki Army.[35]
Weaknesses
Xin found himself incapable of creating larger strategic plans centered around his unit's new size, which made it difficult for him to score victories against even relatively weaker opponents as long as they were using strategical combat after officially being promoted to the rank of a 1000-Man Commander.[36] He was also easily provoked in his early days in the military and can be very reckless at times.
His soldiers often shared this trait, as Ryuu Koku mentioned that they fell for feints too easily. It was unknown if Xin had grown pasted these overall weaknesses but in the following years with him gaining more and more experiences through constant touring of war fronts and his instinctual abilities growing these weaknesses became less evident.
This was first shown during the Battle at Shukai Plains as the Hi Xin Unit clashed against the Gyou’un Army in which Xin read Gyou'un's feint attack on the Hi Shin rookies and countered the Zhao General's attempted attack on their HQ.
His cautiousness also grew even further as well since becoming a General, as he felt that something was off during the northern campaign against Zhao as the situations were feeling set up and took an observational approach while watching the initial clashes with the Zhao armies' during their surprise attack on the Kan Ki Army led northern Qin armies in the Battle of Gian.
As for other areas, Xin had yet to fully utilized his speed while wielding General Ou Ki's Glaive having initially found it somewhat heavy which left him vulnerable when fighting.
This was exploited by Gaku Haku Kou during their on the ground duel which caused him to switch it out with his sword instead. However, since then, he has fully integrated his speed having brushed away Fu Tei's sword strikes during their short exchange.

Other Skills
Xin's Air of a General.
Throughout in the series, it is sometimes shown that exponentially people have a sort of aura around them, examples being the late Great Generals Ou Ki and Go Kei, and the ministers of Ryo Fui Faction. It isn't known if this is just the art appearing to make them stronger or this is actually an ability of the individual themselves. However, there are hints here and there that this is maybe an actual truth to this ability as Yo Tan Wa and her bodyguards were able to sense it coming from Xin during his battle with Sa Ji and his soldiers. And multiple Generals have mentioned being able to sense strong opponents if they are near them. We also don't know if one is able to sense an opponent and see their aura is the same type of ability. Xin has also shown to have remarkable eyesight, being able to see Zhao's heavy cavalry from a mile away and expressed shock at Sou Jin and Sou Tan's archery skills during their demonstration.
Just as General Ou Ki was on the verge of dying during the Battle of Bayou, he taught the young soldier how to breathe and see a route of escape when retreating. When he opened his eyes, he was able to see his allies, enemies, battlefield more clearly, and was able to see the safest escape routes and patterns. We don't know if Xin is currently capable of using this technique, because it is never mentioned after this event. However, it is possible that during the invasion of Qin by the Coalition Army, when he started to awaken his instinctual ability, he is actually utilizing what he learned from General Ou Ki. Of course, this is purely speculation.
Cold Resistance: Xin appears to be able to easily ignore the coldness of winter as he always wears his usual sleeveless outfit without showing a hint of discomfort or signs of shivering.[37] It's unknown if this is simply for comedic effects or not.

Owned Land and House
Ri Xin's Manor.
Xin's territory of residence and lands is known as Fuuri (Chinese: Fengli). After his achievements in the Coalition Invasion War, it was enlarged and has since expanded with his numerous achievements on multiple battlefields. Before he left for the Gyou Campaign, he commissioned Den Yuu and his carpenters to build a manor and buildings for him. At the end of the campaign, Den Yuu mentions that they had just finished putting the final touches on the property.
Trivia
- Xin was 3rd place in the popularity vote poll.
- From his time as a servant, Xin had absolutely zero cooking and cleaning skills. But years later, he was able to cook blue gyupoh stew for the Hi Shin Unit as they commented that it tasted good (aside from the blue gyupoh being incredibly poisonous).
- Xin's character is based on the real-life general of Qin, Li Xin, however Li Xin was born of noble lineage, son of a local governor named Li Yao (which was inspiration of Ri Hyou).
- Li Xin is the fifth-generation ancestor of Li Guang, the Flying General, who served the Han dynasty and is the ancestor of the founder of the Tang Dynasty Emperor Gaozu of Tang who was born as Li Yuan.
- In the one-shot Kongo, his story was different, closer to what he was described in his early days than what Kingdom had. He in this story had a little sister Li Tian, he was a student in a sword fighting school, and he and Ei Sei had quite chaotic first impressions.
Etymology
- 信 (jp: Shin; cn: Xìn) means "trust, truth, believe, and letter"
- 李 (jp: Ri; cn: Lǐ) is the character for a plum in Chinese, and also in Japanese, though another character is use more frequently.
