Kaine is a 5000-Man Commander in the Ri Boku Army and one of Ri Boku's closest vassals since their days on the Ganmon northern border regions of the state of Zhao.

Originally, Kaine was introduced as the secondary protagonist in Yasuhisa Hara’s one-shot manga Li Mu and Hai Yin.[1] She later made her first official appearance in the series during the Battle of Bayou, on the fourth day of the conflict, as Ri Boku's bodyguard.

Appearance[]

Kaine is a slim, young and beautiful woman, she has long dark hair tied at the back and wears a robe with armor around her torso. Unlike most army commanders, she doesn't wear any kind of armor protection on her head or shoulders. After her return from Seika, she also started wearing a cape with a choke after the Battle of Hika.

Personality[]

Kaine is a deadly serious person. She seems to be organized at all times and has a wide vision of what is happening around her. She has an eye for recognizing people's skills and she wouldn't mind befriending even an enemy if it is a worthy person. Being Ri Boku's bodyguard, she is very loyal to him.

Relationships[]

Ri Boku[]

Kaine is extremely loyal to Ri Boku, being ready to sacrifice her life for him. Later it was revealed that she is in love with him and on occasions fantasizes about starting a family with Ri Boku.

Ka Ryo Ten[]

They met off the battlefield at the Battle of Bayou Arc and formed a friendship. They refuse to kill each other when they meet on the battlefield.

Fu Tei[]

Whilst they are allies, and they were both under the command of Ri Boku during the battle of Sai, Kaine is frequently shown punching and physically abusing Fu Tei due to the things he says and/or does.

History[]

Li Mu and Hai Yin[]

Kaine grew up in the province of Ganmon, located in the northern part of Zhao, a region constantly raided by the Northern Horsemen Tribes. As a child, she witnessed the brutal death of her parents at the hands of the Xiongnu, leaving her orphaned. The generals sent to protect the region consistently failed, often due to their hot-headedness and impatience, which led to their untimely deaths.

However, when Ri Boku, a relatively young and inexperienced general, was appointed to the region, he managed to halt the Xiongnu’s raids by employing a clever strategy—he avoided direct confrontation. Instead of fighting the raiders head-on, Ri Boku trained the villagers to evacuate and take shelter within the walls of Gan Mon Castle during the attacks.

Initially, Kaine and her friend Shou, an archer, were dissatisfied with this strategy. They longed for revenge and wanted to face the Xiongnu directly, believing it to be cowardly to retreat. Kaine, in particular, was driven by a desire for vengeance after the death of her parents. However, she eventually realized that Ri Boku had experienced a similar tragedy. He, too, had been orphaned in a war and lost his brothers and close friends.

Blinded by rage, Ri Boku had once disobeyed orders and charged headlong into battle with his 1000-man battalion. His satisfaction at killing the enemy general turned to regret when he discovered that his reckless actions had led to the annihilation of his entire unit, which had included his family and friends.

Instead of continuing down the path of vengeance, Ri Boku chose to become a Strategist, prioritizing the survival of his comrades over personal revenge. Unaware that Kaine had come to understand his actions, Shou reported to Kantan that Ri Boku was neglecting his duties, leading to his dismissal and replacement by another impulsive commander. The result was disastrous: Gan Mon Castle was overrun, the replacement general was killed, and most of Zhao's forces in the region were wiped out. Refugees were forced to flee south. Afterward, Shou was killed, and Kaine was left among the few survivors.

Kaine, wounded and filled with regret over Ri Boku's exile and its devastating consequences for Gan Mon, buried her fallen comrades. Shortly after, Ri Boku returned, and the two of them, along with the surviving soldiers, rebuilt their forces. With time, they amassed enough skilled fighters to defeat another Xiongnu raiding party. This victory was witnessed by Yo Tan Wa, who saw the aftermath as she set out on her campaign against the Horse Tribes.

During her time in the northern region, Kaine honed her skills in mountain horsemanship and became a capable dual sword wielder. When Ri Boku left to pursue his path in warfare and politics, Kaine followed him, becoming his loyal bodyguard.

Story[]

At some point, she noticed that Ten was on the walls giving orders and guiding the militia. Instead of killing her, Kaine knocked Ten out and ordered one of her vassals to bring her along as a hostage. Shin, who witnessed the scene, charged at Kaine and knocked her off the walls. Ten grabbed her hand before she could fall and attempted to save her, but Kaine was determined to either take Ten with her or kill her right there. Physical Abilities[]

Master Swordswoman: Kaine is an exceptionally skilled swordswoman, renowned as the best in her hometown. She is particularly proficient in dual sword combat, a rare talent that sets her apart. Her skill was demonstrated when she defeated multiple members of the Shu Ma Clan, some of Kan Ki's fiercest soldiers. However, her strength was not enough to withstand Shi Ryou's relentless attacks.

Horsemanship: During her time in the northern regions of Zhao, Kaine mastered mountain horsemanship, allowing her to lead cavalry effectively in difficult, mountainous terrain. Her expertise in this area made her a valuable asset to any cavalry unit operating in such conditions.

Leadership[]

Kaine is a natural leader, able to command her troops effectively in battle. She commands respect from her soldiers and has shown the ability to inspire them to follow her through difficult situations.

Tactical Abilities[]

Having served alongside Ri Boku for much of her military career, Kaine has developed a keen sense for strategy. She is quick to recognize when a scheme is in play and can act decisively to counter it. For instance, she was able to deduce Shi Ryou's gender based on the way she swung her arms in combat, showing her sharp deductive reasoning.

Weaknesses[]

While Kaine is a skilled and capable commander, she is often too reliant on Ri Boku, lacking the explosive martial power and broad tactical insight needed to independently lead a battlefield. She can struggle when forced to operate outside of his influence or guidance.
