Instinctual generals are not all warriors like Duke Hyou. While some such as Duke Hyou, are like prowling lions, ferociously pouncing upon their prey with a savage fury, others such as Kei Sha can be likened to spiders that lay down subtle traps and wait for the prey to come charging into the trap of their own accord. Those that find themselves ensnared in the traps are rendered utterly helpless to do anything.

Instinctual Type is one of two main types of military commanders along with Strategical Type. Instinctual types use their keen intuition to decide the best course of action on a battlefield and situation.

Abilities[]

The man known as Duke Hyou is able to subtly sense the overall flow of the battle just from taking in an enemy army's positioning and orientation, or the expressions and line of sight of the enemy soldiers.

Unlike Strategists who rely on structured tactics, instinctual types follow their intuition, adapting dynamically to the battlefield. They often charge in first, reacting to even the slightest changes as the battle unfolds, ensuring they maintain an advantage.

One notable example of an "instinctual spider" countering an "instinctual prowling lion" occurred during the Battle of Kankoku Pass. Duke Hyou, embodying the aggressive lion type, charged headfirst into the opposing Zhao army, led by General Kei Sha. However, Kei Sha adapted quickly, luring Duke Hyou into a trap by positioning a hidden force to strike from behind. The ambush was successfully executed, demonstrating the strategic patience of the spider type.

Another example of instinctual prowess was Duke Hyou’s ability to counter Ri Boku’s Ryuudou maneuver. Though Ri Boku attempted to entrap and disrupt the Duke Hyou Army’s formation, Duke Hyou instinctively adapted, turning the flow of the maneuver to his advantage. His intuition allowed him to close in on his target, proving the power of raw battlefield perception.

The specific traits of an instinctual type vary among individuals. Ri Shin demonstrated his emerging talent as one during the Battle of Kankoku Pass. Ri Boku, after his encounter with Duke Hyou, gained insight into instinctual warfare, while Kei Sha exhibited such abilities from childhood. Some commanders, like Ren Pa, possess both instinctual and strategic qualities, making them exceptionally versatile.

Strengths and Weaknesses[]

Strategic generals often struggle against instinctual types because their unpredictable movements defy conventional countermeasures. As noted by Gen Pou during the first day of the Battle of Sanyou, instinctual warriors can reach peak morale easily. However, once their confidence is broken, they fall into despair and struggle to recover.

The strengths and weaknesses of instinctual types depend on their individual style:

  • Engaging Types ("Lions"): These commanders thrive in direct combat but are vulnerable to sophisticated strategies. They rely on reacting to a “fire” igniting on the battlefield but often suffer heavy casualties to maintain this stance.
  • Entrapping Types ("Spiders"): These tacticians excel at setting traps but can become impatient if their prey does not take the bait. This was evident with Kei Sha, who grew enraged during the Battle of Kokuyou Hills when Kan Ki refused to engage, effectively neutralizing his strategy.

Instinctual types bring an unpredictable edge to warfare, but their effectiveness hinges on their ability to maintain confidence and adapt without falling into predictable patterns.

Trivia[]

  • Instinctual types are often compared to different kinds of animals, like Duke Hyou being a lion and Kei Sha being a spider. As his eyes were serpent-like, Gyou'un could've been either a snake or a dragon.
