Hei Rai initially wanted to enlist in the Hi Shin Unit as a soldier, but when he experienced the grueling conditions, he grew frustrated, especially when he and Kan To, along with the other recruits, were put through endurance training instead of combat drills. To test their resolve, Suu Gen challenged them to attack him with real swords, while he would only defend with a wooden blade. After being easily defeated, Hei Rai became even more determined to join and passed the recruitment process.
During the training sessions, he and the other new recruits struggled to coordinate as a unit. However, once they learned to move in sync, their superior physical abilities allowed them to overpower the veteran infantry. Despite this success, they were quickly beaten by Shin, proving the gap in experience and skill.
