I don't know about desires or whatever, I just want to help Shin fulfill his dream.

—To Gai Mou, the Raging Bull.

Ka Ryo Ten is a Strategist of the Qin Military and the head strategist of the Hi Shin Unit.

She is the adoptive younger sister of Ri Shin, having grown close to him after years of fighting together as comrades-in-arms.[3] She is also one of the last surviving descendants of the Kyuumei Tribe, a once powerful mountain tribe that was wiped out decades ago in a war against a young Yo Tan Wa and her army.

During her childhood, Ka Ryo Ten lived in Kokuhi Village, where she worked as a lookout for local thugs and outlaws after the passing of her grandfather.[4] Initially an obstacle in Shin’s mission to reach a location near the village, she later aided both Shin and Ei Sei in their escape when she saw an opportunity to earn riches and rewards from the Qin king. This decision ultimately led her to become entangled in Ei Sei’s battle for the throne during his half-brother Sei Kyou’s rebellion.

After Sei Kyou's defeat, Ten experienced a sense of peace for the first time in her life. However, she soon realized that she wasn’t searching for peace, but rather for a sense of purpose—one she found in fighting alongside Shin, Sei, and their allies as they pursued their ambitions.[5] Lacking talent in martial arts and direct combat, she chose to become a strategist, training diligently despite her youth and initial inexperience. Over time, she became one of the most skilled tacticians in the Qin Military.[6]

Ka Ryo Ten has since gained widespread recognition across the Warring States for her exceptional strategic abilities. As the Hi Shin Unit’s chief strategist, her tactics have become one of the unit’s greatest strengths, solidifying her reputation as a brilliant military mind.

Appearance[]

When first introduced, Ka Ryo Ten was a small girl with blue eyes and short hair, giving her a tomboyish appearance. This led Shin and others to mistake her for a boy. However, after the Sanyou Campaign, she grew taller, her hair lengthened, and her overall appearance became noticeably more feminine and mature.

This was made evident when soldiers of the Hi Shin Unit pointed out her obvious gender to Shin, who still mistakenly believed she was a boy. Following the Coalition War, Ten’s hair grew to shoulder length, and she matured further, developing into a beautiful and well-endowed young woman.

As a child, Ka Ryo Ten wore a straw poncho to conceal her gender. Underneath, she donned a zigzag-collared tunic with a small chainmail cuirass for protection. She also wrapped bandages around her feet and legs. When she later joined the Hi Shin Unit, she wore a straw-yellow tunic with zigzag hemlines, matching armbands, and brown boots.

One of her most consistent features throughout the series is the two strands of hair that stick out from the top of her head, along with her Kyuumei owl mask, which remains attached to her straw poncho.

As the Hi Shin Unit grew into a 4000-man force, she began wearing a cape, signifying her higher rank and role as the unit’s chief strategist.

Personality[]

Ka Ryo Ten is a survival genius to have survived for so long in her childhood without relatives since she was orphaned at a young age of five. She is an incredibly inquisitive young woman armed with keen perceptive fit her due to her former rough lifestyle. She aspires to be a world-renowned strategist.

From living with the plain's folk for such a long time, Ka Ryo Ten doesn't really consider herself a mountain person anymore and does not think she would be able to fit in if she were ever able to find her relatives.

Goals[]

  1. To help Shin fulfill his dream and achieve happiness with him.

A young girl pretending to be a boy inherited blowgun from Muta, provides a good support

Ka Ryo Ten is the Hi Shin Unit's head strategist and equally incredibly adept in this role. Her strategic prowess has played a critical role in the Hi Shin Unit's rise to prominence, proving her genius as a master strategist of the Qin military. And she is shown to have great memory with extremely good eyesight, being able to make out the words on the Zhao army's flags while being positioned a number of miles away.

Physical Abilities[]

Endurance: Ka Ryo Ten, while not as immense as Shin or Sei's, can endure nail-biting forms of pain with her tenacity being over 95. As a child, she was able to take the occasional beating from the thugs of Kokuhei village and survived a stab wound from one of Sei Kyou's officials. She still possesses this tolerance as she took abuse from the enraged Wei soldiers of the Gai Mou Army during her imprisonment, and withstood arrow wounds from Kin Mou's killing detachment as she used her hand to block a kill shot meant for her head.

Blowgun Proficiency: Ka Ryo Ten, seeing that she lacked a weapon, retrieved a blowgun from the assassin, Muta after his defeat. The "dying' assassin also gives her his numbing darts.[7] She was somewhat awkward with it at first but quickly got used to it as she helped defend Shin in his attempt to open the Crimson Turtle Gate when she shot a rebel soldier in the eye, which was in parts luck, wounded one of Sei Kyou's officials, and stopped Ketsu Shi in his attempted escape that gives Bajio and Shunmen enough time to slay the Chancellor.

Leadership[]

Ka Ryo Ten is a proven leader with a bold approach to any problems that she faces on the battlefield. In her first encounter with the Hi Shin soldiers, she showed her cool-headed resolve as she shrugged off Den Ei's confrontation while putting down any thoughts of her being an ordinary woman. [8] She frequently enters the fray of battle at crucial times to help rally and reorganize forces, making herself a lynchpin in the Hi Shin Unit's leadership to allow the unit to utilize the full capacity of its strength beyond her role as a tactician.[9]

Tactical Abilities[]

Master Strategist: Ka Ryo Ten was formally trained in strategic theory, battlefield tactics, military formations, and formal strategies under the guidance of Shou Hei Kun, Kai Oku, and Mou Ki during her years at the Strategist Academy of Qin. While studying, her exceptional skill quickly became evident—she was said to be on par with Mou Ki, the top student at the time, in tabletop simulations. Among all students, only Ten and Mou Ten received special recognition as strategists from their former teacher.[10]

On the battlefield, Ten has proven to be a highly capable strategist, employing both unorthodox tactics and standard military strategies to great effect. During her first real battle with the Hi Shin Unit, she outmaneuvered the Wei strategist Hyou Ki by reorganizing the scattered Hi Shin Unit and sneaking past enemy search units. Utilized the bottleneck terrain to entrap the Wei cavalry, leading to the decapitation of one of their commanders. And used Shin as bait to divert attention and successfully capture the Wei HQ with the Kaku Bi Unit while securing an escape route for herself and the unit.

Despite her inexperience at the time, she devised regional-scale strategies, targeting not just immediate enemies but also incorporating allied forces' positions and assistance to gain an advantage.[11]

As Ka Ryo Ten refined her abilities, she completely transformed the Hi Shin Unit into an independent, highly mobile military force—far stronger than before, even when they had Kyou Kai.

During the first day of the Battle of Kankoku Pass, she reorganized the shattered Hi Shin soldiers. Later spreading them out to better locate and regroup with their comrades. Led them to reinforce Shin's assault against Man Goku and blocked the Zhao general's army's retreat using the So Sui Unit to stall their forces.[12]

One of her greatest achievements was during the Battle of Kokuyou Hills, where she personally devised the "Hi Shin Unit-Style River Bridge" strategy. She concentrated forces at two hollow ends, while the center was composed of Shin, the Hi Hyou Unit, and the Kaku Bi Unit. A secondary unit of Hi Shin veterans formed the second wave of the attack. However, the true purpose of these two attacks was a diversion—drawing in the Ba Tei Army while a small unit, led by En, secretly crossed the rushing river at a third opening without resistance.

This maneuver was so unprecedented that Ba Tei, the Zhao general, stood in sheer shock at their ability to cross what was thought to be an uncrossable river, a feat deemed near impossible even by Shou Hei Kun and Ryuu Tou.[13]

Beyond conventional strategies, Ten has also demonstrated expert use of surprise tactics, leveraging brute force [14] and overwhelming speed to catch opponents off guard. [15]

Military Formations: Ka Ryo Ten is an expert in military formations, frequently adapting them to suit the battlefield. Some of her notable uses include using a modified Wedge Formation utilizing shield troops on boats to cross the Yangtze River and secure the shoreline. The Hourai inspired by her former teacher Shou Hei Kun, to psychologically pressure the Ai Army and the Drill Formation, coordinated with the Gaku Ka Army, to break out of Ri Boku’s encirclement during the Battle of Gian.

Weaknesses[]

Ten possesses little to no martial prowess, lacking both immense physical strength and advanced combat techniques like Shin or Kyou Kai. Kyou Kai once informed her that she lacked the necessary body chemistry to learn Clan Shiyuu's swordsmanship and martial arts, indicating that she had no natural talent for combat.

Since becoming a strategist, Ten generally avoids direct combat, but there have been multiple instances where she has thrown herself into battle often putting her life at risk. Over the course of several battles, this reckless tendency has nearly led to her death.

Additionally, she has a habit of getting overly caught up in minor details, sometimes losing sight of the bigger picture. This flaw was notably exploited by Ri Boku, who successfully deceived her with a childish but effective tactical ploy during the Battle of Hango.

Other Skills[]

Cooking: Ka Ryo Ten is an exceptional cook with her being in charge of cooking back when she and Shin lived together in Fuuri. After she left for the Strategist Academy, her goodbye leftovers rendered Kyou Kai speechless on how good it was, since then Kyou Kai has always made sure she's first in line whenever Ka Ryo Ten is passing out food. And whenever she cooks with Ryuu Yuu, the two are capable of making delicious food from simple ingredients.[16]

Healer: Ka Ryo Ten was able teach herself herbalism, having learned from spying on the residents of Kokuhei village. She once showed a familiarity with the germs (little demons) infecting one's wounds [17] and regularly treats Shin's wounds with basic first aid [18]

Communication and Logistics: Ka Ryo Ten is a master in managing communications between units and allies. And is primarily in charging of managing and securing logistics after taking over the role from So Sui.
