Gaku Rai was a 1000-Man Commander of the Qin Military and a former member of the Duke Hyou Army. After his master's demise, he joined the Hi Shin Unit and became one of its most important commanders. Later leading the Black Hi Hyou Unit after they were promoted to an army unit. He was killed in battle during Qin's invasion of Gian in the Battle of Gian by Zhao General Jyou Ka Ryuu.
Appearance []
Gaku Rai was a man with a massive build and height, being one of the tallest commanders in the Hi Shin Unit aside from Ryuu Sen and Den Yuu. He is bald, but had full lengthy black hair in his youth before going bald, has a chin-beard and mustache and numerous scars on his face, as well as his whole body. As a military officer, he wears an armor befitting his rank, and a helmet with spikes on the sides.
Personality[]
Gaku Rai was a very composed man. He didn't talk much and always appeared be calm. His respect for Shin led him to join his unit, but he never forgot his previous master, Duke Hyou. As a commander, he was very considerate towards his subordinates - which is seen when he requested for food to be brought to the guards left behind on guard duty. This is evident even in the past as he looked after an inexperienced younger Ga Ro. He was also an honorable man as he bowed his head to Sou Gen's sons and heirs, the archers Jin and Tan in shame as he survived the battle that took their father's life.
History[]
From a very young age Gaku Rai and his brother, Gaku Ga joined the Qin Military under the Duke Hyou Army. While serving under Duke Hyou, he met a young child soldier by name of Ga Ro who was assigned to his squad due to his troubled attitude. Gaku Rai would look after Ga Ro as the two grew to become friends and brothers-in-arms. Gaku Rai eventually became a 1000-Man Commander and spent most of his military career fighting across the borders of Qin with his unit and Ga Ro.
Story[]
Coalition Invasion Arc[]
Gaku Rai joined his lord to defend Qin from the coalition invasion. Along with the Duke Hyou Army, he was stationed to the far right of the Kankoku Pass where he was among those who initiated the war, under the Duke's order. At one point Duke Hyou's army was cornered by Kei Sha and it was then when Shin used his instincts to lead them out of the enemy general's trap. With that move, Shin gained Gaku Rai's respect.
Before the Battle of Sai, when Duke Hyou chased after Ri Boku and his army inside the Battle of the Southern Path, Gaku Rai was one of the soldiers who joined him. After his lord's death at Hou Ken's hands, Gaku Rai, Ga Ro, and the remaining Duke Hyou soldiers retreated along with the Hi Shin Unit and managed to safely reach the city of Sai. During the siege of this city by the Ri Boku Army, Gaku Rai and the rest of the remnants of the Duke Hyou Army soldiers were attached to the Heki Unit of the eastern wall, under the command of Heki. Despite being fiercely raided by the Zhao soldiers led by Shin Sei Jou, the deputy of the Ri Boku Army. The elite Duke Hyou Army soldiers fought fiercely and valiantly to avenge their master and managed to repel their enemies till the final day of the battle.
Kyou Kai's Revenge Arc[]
After the Coalition Army's invasion of Qin, and Duke Hyou's death, he, Ga Ro, and 500 other remnants of his army, joined the newly promoted 3000 men Hi Shin Unit. Although the war was over, the Hi Shin Unit was sent to the eastern borders of Qin, in the Kaisou region, in order to secure the area from the remaining enemy forces and help restore the villages.
Gaku Rai joined in that expedition as a new member of the unit. He was seen talking with Shin and the others, explaining the way his former comrades felt about Shin and that there was no real reason for them to join the Shin's unit. Soon, they proceeded to engage the Wei soldier's camp, which was dangerously close to Hei Village. After completing the task with relative ease, they returned to the village to taste the delicious food already prepared by Ryuu Yuu and Ka Ryo Ten. Gaku Rai and the others would sit with the villagers as they chatted.
Fire Dragons of Wei Arc[]
Gaku Rai was presented for at the Hi Shin HQ after they received the news of Ka Ryo Ten being kidnapped by the Wei. He was later presented for the war council before the third day of combat to discuss Ten's proposal.
Koku You Campaign Arc[]
Gaku Rai, Ga Ro, and their unit were with Shin as they acted as decoys to distract the Ba Tei Army as En and his detachment crossed the river. Later, he was shown to be with Shin when the Kei Sha Army attacked them.
Bureaucrats Job Arc[]
Gaku Rai was present for the Hi Shin Unit's recruitment drive as one of the overseeing trainers. After the brothers, Sou Jin and Sou Tan demonstrated their incredibly archery abilities to Shin and the others, he would tell all present about their father's heroic deeds during his service in the Duke Hyou Army. Their father's crowning moment being his duel with Duke Haku, Wei's member of the Ten Bows of China, as he killed the archer during a battle with the Wei and his recognition as a member of the Ten Bows for Qin. Gaku Rai would bow his head in shame as he apologized to both the brothers as he survived the battle that killed their father after being saved by him. Both the brothers ask that he raise his head as they were grateful for his story as they thought their father died a pathetic death.
Zhao Crisis Arc[]
The previous Hi Hyou Unit is divided into two separate units' of 1000 soldiers each with Gaku Rai leading the Black Hi Hyou Unit and Ga Ro, his former lieutenant, leading the Red Hi Hyou Unit.
Shiyuu Conflict Arc[]
Zhao's Retaliation Arc[]
Gaku Rai was with the Hi Shin Unit, in the right flank of the Kan Ki Army, when they were surrounded by the Northern Zhao armies led by Ri Boku. The Hi Shin Unit decided to abandon their post and travel all the way to left flank, joining forces with the Gaku Ka Unit in order to create an opportunity to change the tides of battle. The joint Hi Shin and Gaku Ka decided to pierce the encirclement created by Ri Boku using a full cavalry attack on a Drill Formation. Gaku Rai defied common sense and took point on the wedge, leading his soldiers from the front. However, this bold move would be met with dire consequences as the veteran faced none other than Zhao General Jyou Ka Ryuu of the Seika Army. As strong and experienced as he was, Gaku Rai was no match for the Seika General and was cut down.

Gaku Rai showed himself to be an incredibly capable military commander due to his vast experience as a former soldier of the elite Duke Hyou Army. After joining Hi Shin Unit, he became an important core member due his immense military capabilities.
Physical Abilities[]
Glaive Mastery: Gaku Rai was a very capable and skilled fighter both on a horse and on foot, his experience as an elite trooper. He used a podao as his main weapon and showed himself to be very proficient as he slew multiple enemies with ease.
Immense Endurance: Gaku Rai demonstrated a strong endurance as he and his comrades managed to secure their post during the Battle of Sai against multiple enemies, without showing any signs of fatigue, despite the prolonged siege.
Leadership[]
Gaku Rai proved to be a capable leader, being able to lead his unit effectively on the battlefield. In the past, he earned the loyalty of Garo when they were both child soldiers. Ga Ro saw Gaku Rai as family (as others surely did too) and has followed him ever since.
